Outreach + Engagement

From community engagement to event and volunteer coordination, Amelia seeks to connect people with their public lands and services. As always, Amelia centers equity and justice in this realm, aiming to dismantle systems of oppression and provide avenues for engagement to those whose voices have historically not been heard.

 

Community outreach

  • Led the participation in dozens of community outreach events, incorporating strategic activities and products to engage event attendees, as a representative of the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Metro Regional Government, and more

  • Design and create engagement materials such as newsletters, event programs, memes, social media posts, flyers, brochures, and posters to communicate with strategically targeted groups

  • Directed outreach for events, including a sustainable design conference and a community yoga festival

Public involvement

  • Created public involvement plan for St Johns Prairie, a planned natural area in North Portland OR

  • Designed an innovative virtual public involvement process for master plan review, highlighting the voices of historically underrepresented communities and emphasizing meaningful engagement in decision-making

  • Served as Community Engagement Fellow at Metro Regional Government’s Parks & Nature department, with funding from Portland State University’s Hatfield Center for Public Service

Event coordination

  • Served as Outreach Director for HOPES, a student-led sustainable design conference in its 26th year at University of Oregon. With event dates of April 15-17, pivoted the conference from IRL to all-virtual in the early days of COVID quarantine, successfully registering over 600 unique registrants from around the globe for this new format, and navigating the new (at the time) logistics of hosting a conference via Zoom

  • Co-coordinated free New Orleans Earth Day Festival with music, food, and green businesses; securing a new event venue, introducing a bingo game to improve attendee engagement, and leading the event planning committee

  • Led coordination and design of dance marathon event to raise money for environmental justice organizing, doubling the event’s revenue from the previous year due to reduced event expenses and an innovative new participant model

Volunteer program management

  • Managed the volunteer program at Cottage Grove Ranger District in Oregon

  • Designed and administered volunteer intake process as volunteer coordinator at environmental justice nonprofit

  • Managed interns, high school groups, volunteers through a college course, event volunteers, planning committees, and more
